The Greater Columbus Swim School
2012 Swimming Lesson Information
- Creating the Difference... GCSTO Strong, GCSTO Proud -
As a Local Partner in USA Swimming’s Make a Splash Campaign, we are asked to gather data on the ethnicity of our participants to better determine how our program is servicing ALL aspects of the central Ohio community so we do ask for that information for summary reasons, alone.

GCSTO's Make A Splash Scholarship Program Announced
GCSTO will also be awarding $5,000 in scholarships over the course of the next year as the team was awarded a $4,000 grant by the USA Swimming Foundation and will then add in at least another $1,000 to the program themselves in order to help more central Ohio children learn how to swim. Scholarships will be available for community service groups who work with those in need and those who might not otherwise ever have a chance to learn to swim under the eyes of a professional AND for 2 sets of individuals... family members of our active military and low-income families. Please see our brochure for more information on these programs.
We are proud that the Greater Columbus Swim School Program was chosen as central Ohio’s #1 lesson program in the 2009 Nickelodeon’s Parent’s Pick Awards, has been chosen by the USA Swimming Foundation as central Ohio’s local partner in their national Make A Splash
campaign and has now been selected as the "Best Of Columbus" in terms of swimming lesson programs by the US Commerce Association for 2011!
**************************
This program has been in operation for over 21 years now and is structured to be one
of the most progressive swimming lesson program designs to be found! Developed by GCSTO head coach, Steve Nye, the GCSS has become a model program to follow. Years of continual development using the advice of all involved in the program have led to the current structural format of that which is offered. We teach basic in-water survival techniques as well as advanced competitive swimming skills to our participants in an intricately well-structured and well-organized manner. Our program highlights include:
* Multiple Locations (4 year-around indoor locations with the addition of our Fort
Rapids Water Park & Resort location and 3 more summer outdoor locations all over
central Ohio). Note that we do not teach school age beginner 2 classes or above at Ft. Rapids nor do we teach any diving at that location due to the depth of the pool.
* Multiple Class Days & Times (we virtually have classes 6-7 days per week throughout
the entire course of the year and most often at more than one time throughout the
day)
* Private, Semiprivate & Group Lessons
* Parent-Tot, Preschool, School Age & Adult Classes
* Small Class Sizes (3-4 max in preschool, adult & schoolage beginner 1 classes and 4-
5 max in all remaining schoolage classes)
* Flex Scheduling (we form fit our schedules during the scheduled days and times that
we teach classes around your schedule so that you can have your class scheduled at
a time that is most convenient for you)
* Makeup Classes (we allow anyone missing a class, for whatever reason, to try and
schedule a makeup class on another day, at another time, or at another location to
replace that missed class if the availability exists within our current schedule to do so)
* Highly Trained/Certified Instructors (all of our instructors are life guard, CPR & First
Aid certified, must complete our own Instructor’s Training Course/ITC, participate in 2
yearly in-services and must complete our 4-part Advanced Swim School Skills
Instructors Training Course). Note that of the 9 head level coaches on our Columbus area swimming team, 8 of these coaches have taught within our swim school program with 7 of these coaches getting their start within the swim school program!
* An Introductory Core Strength Development Program For School-age Participants (so
that they can help develop the strength skills needed to improve their
swimming while at home)
NOTE ABOUT PARENT-TOT CLASSES
Please note that we are in larger pools and open air environments so it may be colder for very young swimmers. As such, we'd suggest using your own bathtub for very young swimmers instead of signing them up for parent-tot classes. While we offer the classes (as some people insist that they want these classes) our suggestion is to simply look at the skills in this level and work on those skills with your child in the privacy of your own home. This keeps them warmer, can be done more frequently, keeps them less prone to sickness as a result of being around other children at this age and will result in less travel time for you. Once they do get to be a little older they can make the jump for sure! Still, some families insist that they want these classes so please note that our warmest pool is normally the Concourse when it comes to signing up for these classes.

Greater Columbus Swim School Lesson Participants...
Ready To Join Our Swim Team?
If you have taken swimming lessons with us through the Greater Columbus Swim School dating back to the spring of 2009, we have an incredible incentive program for you. For every full session that you’ve done with us in group, semi-private or private lessons since the spring of 2009 (which was the inception of this incentive program) we will award you with a $10 credit good towards membership onto our swimming team, the Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio. This is not a credit towards future swimming lessons but is only towards the swim team, itself. What we want to do is thank you for your dedication and support by helping you to make your first year on GCSTO's age group swim team an enjoyable and INCREDIBLY affordable experience. If you’ve been with us since then and want to find out what your credit would be please contact julinye@ymail.com. If you would like to join our team please also contact coach Steve Nye at stevenye@sbcglobal.net or 614-478-5445 to find out how to do so. Any swimmers who are currently at our School-Age Intermediate 2 or Advanced levels are automatically ready for our team (as this is how our program is designed) so please contact coach Nye if you’d like to take advantage of the team’s 2 week free trial period for new swim team members. We practice at 4 locations and have programs that meet anywhere from 2 to 4 times a week based on that which you feel you are ready for in terms of commitment. Remember, if its’ still swimming lessons that you want through our Greater Columbus Swim School, you should contact one of the head instructors listed above. Thanks!
