Ohio High School State 2011 Championships Recap
The Ohio High School State Championships were held in CT Brannin Natatorium from February 24-26 and 29 GCSTO athletes from 14 different high schools competed in the 3 day event. As with all meets of such caliber, there is a lot of energy and emotion that goes into competing at this level. We'd like to congratulate all athletes who participated in this event with special note on the following performances:
Maddie Martin - State Champion in the 100yd butterfly (53.34) setting a new school record (Pickerington Central), a new GCSTO all-time team record, a new meet record, a new state high school record and a new pool AND THE NUMBER ONE TIME FOR ALL 15 YEAR OLDS IN AMERICA. Her time is now less than .9 seconds off of the National High School record held by Olympic Gold Medalist, Misty Hyman. Her performance was selected as the Female Performance of the Meet for which Maddie was awarded a beautiful trophy. Maddie also swam a 50.86 in the 100yd free just 25 minutes later for a second place finish in that event. She is currently 6th in the country in this event for all 15 year olds! Maddie is now also qualified for USA Swimming's ConocoPhillips National Championships this summer and Short Course Nationals next winter!
Morgan Belli - Morgan set 2 new school records (Gahanna Lincoln High School) and 2 new GCSTO 15-16 girls team records finishing 4th in both events in her first high school state championship meet with a 200 IM time of 2:04.65 (taking it back from Andee Cottrell who had taken it just the day before) and a 100 back time of 56.21. Morgan's backstroke time places her currently as the 16th fastest 15 year old in the country and her 200 IM time currently places her 20th in the country. It's notable that the backstroke record she broke in high school and on our team was that of GCSTO 2000 Olympian, Amanda Adkins! Morgan is now also qualified for USA Swimming's Short Course National Championships next winter!
Ronnie Bolden - Ronnie set 2 new high school records (Bishop Hartley High School) in the 50yd free (21.13 for 4th place) and the 100yd butterfly (50.23 for 3rd place). His 50 free was also a GCSTO team record for the 15-16 boys which was held by Marc Courtney-Brooks who swam at Kenyon College and won more national championship titles there than just about any swimmer at that level of the sport. Ronnie's 50 free time currently ranks him as the 18th fastest 16 year old in the country while his fly time ranks him 22nd in the country! Ronnie is now also qualified for USA Swimming's Junior National Championships this summer and Short Course Junior Nationals next winter!
Riley Buer - Swimming for Westerville South, Riley finished 8th in the 100 breast with a 1:05.99 in her first appearance at the state meet ever! Watch for more from Riley in the near future as she is quickly becoming a powerhouise in this stroke.
Andee Cottrell - State champion runner-up in the 200yd IM (2:04.73) setting a new school record (Bishop Hartley High School) and a new GCSTO 15-16 girls team record shattering her 2:07 from the year before. She also was state champion runner-up in the 100yd breaststroke (1:03.02)swimming under the old state record time and yet another personal best. Andee's breastroke time currently places her 4th in the country for all 15 year olds while her 200 IM time places her as 25th in the country! Andee is now also qualified for USA Swimming's ConocoPhillips National Championships this summer & Short Course Nationals Championships next winter!
Ranndi Grubbs - Randy swam to a 6th place finish with a 57.96 just shy of her new school record set earlier (Columbus School for Girls) in prelims and dropping over 2 seconds from her time last year.
Hope Mitchell - Third place in the 100yd breast (1:03.64) setting a new school record (Ontario High School). Her time places her currently 17th in the country for all 17 year olds! Hope is now also qualified for USA Swimming's Junior National Championships this summer and Short Course National Championships next winter!
William Rosler - State champion runner-up in the 100yd butterfly (50.16). Will had broken the state meet & state record with a 49.70 in the prelims (also a new team record for Columbus Academy) but this was broken in finals by the new state champion. Will also swam to a second place finish in the 100yd freestyle with a time of 46.13. Both times broke school records for Columbus Academy. Will is now also qualified for USA Swimming's Short Course National Championships next winter!
Will Westwater - Will finished 7th in 50yd free with a 21.78 and 8th place in the 100yd free with a 48.77 after not even making the meet in individual events last year.
Conrad Wuorinen - Conrad broke a minute in the 100 fly half way through his 2009/2010 season and finished 6th place in the 100yd fly this year with a blistering personal best time of 51.11.

GCSTO's Janel Mathews & William Rosler Named As A USA Swimming Scholastic All-Americans - 2011
Each year, USA Swimming recognizes its members who excel both in the classroom and in the pool. The Scholastic All-America Team is made up of U.S. high school student-athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who have achieved the required time standard. For the 2009-2010 season, 25 male Ohio Swimming swimmers made the list and 18 female swimmers made the list. GCSTO team members Janel Mathews and William Rosler were recognized as two of these candidates after qualifying in the 100 & 200 breaststrokes (Janel) and 100yd, free, fly & backs (Will) and maintaining above the required academic standards. Congratulations go out to Janel and Will... and to all athletes who understand the importance of successful academic careers!
