2009/2010 Short Course Season Year In Review
It has been a year of change for the team but our coaches, parents and athletes have maintained an amazing show of focus during this time. Just 2 short years ago we set forth on a mission to make an even greater impact on the sport of swimming than we had ever made in the past. Yes, as an age group team we have had more US National Team Members than any other team in central Ohio, more international medalists than any other team in central Ohio, more world ranked athletes than any other team in central Ohio, more Olympic Trail qualifiers than any other team in central Ohio, more National Champions than any other team in central Ohio & the only Olympian from any team in central Ohio – and in some of these cases, more than all teams combined in the area… but we felt we could do more. As such, we worked as a staff to revamp the entire program and push forward in a direction that we felt would create even greater excellence within the program. And we worked hard to ensure that this was done with our own swimmers and new swimmers that we brought into this sport. With literally over 100 new swimmers to year around USA Swimming this year – which equates to over 40% of our team – our families, athletes and staff worked hard to continue on with the mission. This past weekend marked an absolutely amazing show of what this team is all about and how pleased we are with the path we have chosen.

Ohio Swimming Age Group Championship Meet
With only 8 (including relay, only, swimmers) of our 40 swimmers returning from last year’s state age group championship team the staff, our parents and our athletes rebuilt our state age group championship team up to 34 swimmers in just 6 short months… a 400% increase in that period of time! And what was just as amazing was that we nearly matched our overall team placing this year as compared to last! In 2009 we were sixth overall and this year we were seventh falling just 1.5 points shy of moving into sixth place! And then there were the individual athlete and relay performances:

Cottrell & Martin Rock At SC Nationals
GCSTO's Andee Cottrell & Maddie Martin swam their first Senior level National Meet in Federal Way on December 4 at the USA Swimming Short Course National Championships. Both rose to the occasion and found that they can compete with the best of the best in the United States. Competing against other age group swimmers (not many others their age but a few), many college swimmers, former Olympians, postgraduates & foreign athletes they represented the team well. Maddie went into the meet in the 100 fly seeded around 85th and rose about 24 spots to 61st in the 100 fly with her second best time ever (57.28). Andee went in seeded last in the event and rose over 23 spots after swimming her best time ever in the 100 breast (1:05.58). Andee's time is the 14th fastest in the country for the 13-14 girls 100 breast this year since September while Maddie's ties her for the 11th fastest time in the 13-13 girls 100 fly to date. Both athletes proved that even at 14 years old and even without the "suits", they could compete with best and showed that it's still about the athlete and not about the suit! Congratulations go out to these two!

Finnegan To Join 2008 NCAA Champions Arizona Wildcats
GCSTO's Gracie Finnegan has made a verbal commitment to the Arizona University Wildcats who were the Women's NCAA National Champions in 2008 and who have produced 2 NCAA "Women of the Year" in the last 3 years (Whitney Myer's in 2007 and Lacey Nymeyer in 2009). Congratulations Gracie!

Whitaker To Join The Minnesota Golden Gophers
GCSTO's Sandy Whitaker has made his commitment to the University of Minnesota. Sandy is a USA Swimming Junior & Senior National qualifier with GCSTO and was the Ohio High School State Champion in, both, the 100yd backstroke and the 100yd butterfly events last year. Sandy adds to an incredibly strong list if recruits that the Golden Gophers have brought in, yet, again, this year. Congratulations Sandy!
